Smith St. Review

A while ago I was invited to meet some friends in the Union Bar which is a good size pub just off Smith Street in Collingwood. Having gotten off the tram at the wrong location, we decided to take a wander along Smith. Its been a hell of a long time since I'd been in the area and I've known for a long time that the region was undergoing somewhat of a transformation.

Still, it was surprising to note just how many bars and cafes had popped up along the way. Of course it wasn't long before thoughts of a full review came to the fore. Initially the plan was to have one comprehensive review, however it became apparent very quickly that this was an ambitios call and would require quite a number of visits to the region.

Our first stop was actually A Bar Called Barry which strangely was closed for a number of private functions. I tend to consider any bar that closes on a Saturday night as being unreliable and certainly unsuitable for meeting up with friends. Nevertheless we will go back and try again.

While actually located in Gertrude Street, Yelza is a discreet shop front right near the corner of Gertrude and Smith. Difficult to know what the place is unless you have been there before or if you have good directions. Still once inside it all becomes clear. It also becomes quite cramped. The place is divided into two parts, nearest the entrance is a good size bar which is staffed by friendly, abeit slow, staff. The other section is for dining.

If you can get into one of the large comfy armchairs or score a bar stool you'll be fine, however, everyone else has to put up with the constant flow of people heading passed.

Bourbon and cola will set you back $6.50 and uses post mix. Theres a good range of quality wines, plenty of bottled beers and the only tap beers available are Stella and Cascade. There is also a menu with some interesting but mostly standard cocktails.

Immediately next to Yelza is a door and stairway right into Alia. Once again can be difficult to find, but well worth the visit. The bar is huge and fills most of the room, which is great as its easy to get to and service is fast and friendly. A Bourbon and Coke (from the can) will set you back $6.50. A number of beers are available on tap including Stella and Cascade.

Lost some major points here as the restroom facilities are the bare minimum, in other words, expect to spend a lot of your night queueing.
